SCUE’s mission is simple: improve undergraduate education at Penn.

The Student Committee on Undergraduate Education was founded in 1965 as an independent student lobby to advocate for student self-determination – the ability to shape one’s own education. Over the course of fifty years, SCUE’s suggestions and proposals have initiated and guided some of the most significant projects in Penn’s history:

  • Pass/fail grading
  • Penn Course Review
  • Fall Break
  • Preceptorials
  • Improved Academic Advising
  • College House System

SCUE takes as its purview any issue which affects undergraduate education or the intellectual atmosphere at Penn. We serve our duty in various roles: both as advocates for the student voice and as advisors to the faculty and administration. Our current projects include:

  • OPenned – an online learning platform for exploring the intellectual community at Penn through a series of interdisciplinary tutorials
  • Roadmap to Research – a comprehensive guide to undergraduate research at Penn
  • 2015 White Paper – every 5 years SCUE publishes a comprehensive review of undergraduate education. If you have suggestions or comments about what we should include in our upcoming White Paper, please drop us a line here.

SCUE’s membership consists of approximately 20 to 30 undergraduates from all four schools who are selected by a six-member Steering Committee. The Steering Committee is elected by a full Committee vote each January.

We accept applications for membership from freshmen and sophomores in both the fall spring semesters. The Committee always seeks bright, articulate, motivated undergraduates who wish to have a greater say in the educational decisions which define the undergraduate experience at Penn.
